Obituary for Linda Mueller (Sonntag)

Linda Mueller of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Otto Mueller, passed away on Wednesday, September 18th, 2013 at the age of 90 years. Linda leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Harry of Edmonton, Peter (Patricia) of Medicine Hat, Udo (Emily) of St. Paul, and Edwin (Lisa) of Edmonton; one daughter, Annelie Smith of Calgary; thirteen grandchildren, Evan, Aidan, Adam, Kelsey (Nathan), Erin, Shelby, Stephanie, Lisa, Douglas, Carla (Matt), Philip (Diane), Lisa (Corey), and Sara (Brett); seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Loni (Horst) Koennicke, one brother-in-law, Walter Zieler, both of Germany; daughter-in-law, Maureen Mueller, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Otto, Linda was predeceased by her son, Hartmut Mueller; her parents, Johann and Olga Sonntag; two brothers, Hugo and Bernhard Sonntag; one sister, Agnes Zieler: and one great grandson, Thomas Mueller. Linda Sonntag was born in 1922 in the German settlement of Nadrybie in Poland, the second of five children. Linda was a bright and hard-working child who excelled at school. She loved learning but with limited resources ended her education in her eighth year. A natural beauty, she married Otto Mueller in 1944. After the war the young couple found themselves in East Germany. Three boys, Harry, Peter, and Hartmut were born in the following five years. The small family escaped from the communist zone in 1952 and was sponsored to come to Canada by the Grace Baptist Church in Medicine Hat in 1953. By 1960 the family owned a successful grocery store and deli that specialized in European foods and baked goods. Linda was the baker. Her breads, kuchen, pastry and torte made Otto’s Groceries a familiar name in Medicine Hat. It was astounding to many that while working as a baker, a boarding house manager, a mother, and a wife Linda still had time to have and raise three more children – Udo, Annelie, and Edwin. By 1963, Linda was the proud and tired mother of six children. As the children matured and left home, Linda enjoyed vacationing with friends and relatives in hot spots like Florida and Hawaii. A passionate, witty, humorous, caring, intelligent and thoughtful woman, Linda leaves behind a legacy of hard work and commitment and a large family filled with warm and enduring memories. The family feels deep gratitude for the excellent care given to Linda over the years by the staff of Sunnyview and Havenview of South Country Village.
