Obituary for Joanne Morrison (Brackenbury)

Joanne Morrison, beloved wife of Ray Morrison, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on October 25, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer, with her daughter Michelle at her bedside. The former Joanne Dawn Brackenbury was born in Saskatoon SK July 30, 1943 and received her elementary and high school education in Cut Knife SK. While in Cut Knife she was active in her church (St. Paul’s Anglican) with Sunday school (student and teacher), the church youth choir, Junior Auxiliary and Girls’ Auxiliary. She enjoyed participating in figure skating, waterskiing and most sports as well as “hanging out” with friends and family at Atton’s Lake near her home. Joanne attended Saskatoon Business College, then worked briefly for the Saskatchewan Department of Social Services in Saskatoon, then for one year at the University of Saskatchewan Alumni News Office. Following her marriage to Ray in 1963, the couple moved to Medicine Hat where Ray was employed as a teacher by Medicine Hat School District No. 76. Joanne made the decision to become a full-time homemaker for Ray and their two daughters. Joanne was active in Jaycettes, the local ladies morning curling club and the All Saints’ Anglican Church Women, choir member and was church treasurer for the past few years. She was also a volunteer canvasser for several health charities. Joanne enjoyed many types of handicrafts and arts. She worked as a poll clerk and supervisor during municipal, provincial and federal elections, did data entry for the compilation of provincial voters lists and compiled information for the federal census. She also enjoyed part-time jobs at Folklore and the Southview and Lodge gift shops. When her younger daughter began kindergarten, Joanne took up the game of golf which became a true passion. She became a very active member of Connaught Golf Club and served terms as ladies club president, member of the club executive and the pro shop committee. She was a past winner of the ladies club championship and winner of the ladies championship flight at Connaught’s annual Southeastern Golf Tournament and other area tournaments. Although she enjoyed playing competitively she was always happy just to be playing. She also involved her daughters and grandchildren in junior golf leagues. Her Connaught family was very important to her and she appreciated very much the kindness and thoughtfulness of her golf buddies during her illness. As a true “sports grandma” Joanne loved to chauffeur her grandchildren to their ringette, soccer, baseball, football, hockey and golf events and could always be heard cheering them on. She enjoyed travelling to warmer places, especially Las Vegas (where she celebrated her 70th birthday in July 2013) and a trip to Cuba in 2012 with husband, daughters, their spouses and her grandchildren. Joanne is survived by Ray, her husband of fifty years; two daughters, Kim (Michael) Hallas of Medicine Hat and their children Taylor of Cochrane AB and Shaun, Landon and Mitchell of Medicine Hat; and Michelle Morrison (Pierre Plamondon) of Edmonton and her stepsons Josh (Tamara) Plamondon and their children Kai and Talia of Edmonton and Travis (Bekah) Plamondon of Edmonton; one sister Gail Schwab of Calgary; Ray’s siblings Ross (Shirley) Morrison of Medicine Hat and Rhelda (Jim) Winterhalt of Unity SK and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their children. She was predeceased by her parents Harold and Margaret Brackenbury; Ray’s parents Harry and Lou Morrison and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
