Obituary for Demetre "Jim" Michalopoulos

Demetre "Jim" Michalopoulos
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Michalopoulos, our loving father and grandfather, on Thursday, July 16th, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife, Konstantina in 2006; his parents, Peter and Nicoletta; as well as his older sister, Joanna; and younger brother, Petro. He is survived by his sons, Peter (Helen) Michalopoulos and their children, Deanne and James; and John Michalopoulos (Donna Wood) and his children, Zoe and Colin and their mother, Michele. Jim was born in Sparta, Greece and moved to Athens where he received his education. He served in the Greek military air force before immigrating to Toronto in 1954, where he met and married his wife, Dina. Together they raised their family until moving to Medicine Hat in 1983. With his family on his side, Jim was an entrepreneur and was instrumental in establishing many businesses in Toronto and in Medicine Hat. His greatest pride and pleasure was watching his grandchildren grow and be part of their lives. Family was always the priority. He enjoyed all sports, but his favorite pass time somehow always revolved around his beloved Maple Leafs; he watched, analyzed and commiserated for hours at a time. Jim enjoyed traveling and made many trips to his homeland where the ties had always remained strong with his friends and family. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Special thanks to the staff at St. Joseph's Home as well as Dr. Jeraj and Dr. Foley. We are honoring our father and grandfather, as per his request, that a private celebration of his life will be held with his immediate family only.
