Obituary for Helene Auguste Borchert (Eggert)

Helene, Auguste “Helen” Borchert (nee Eggert) of Medicine Hat passed away on Sunday, January 7th, 2018 at the age of 96 years. Helene’s memory will be cherished by her loving family; daughter Marianne, son Guenter, and her only grandchild Geoffrey. Helene and her twin sister Herta were born on March 19th, 1921 in Bladiau, East Prussia (Poland). Her other siblings include the eldest sister Friedel, and youngest sister Elizabeth. Towards the end of WWII, Helene was part of the long march of refugees, which followed the shores of the Baltic Sea in the winter of 1945, to eventually lead her to Hamburg, Germany, where she met her husband Fred. He had spent the majority of the war in a camp in the Kananaskis valley of Alberta, and they were married in Hamburg on March 19th, 1949. Her daughter Marianne was born, in Hamburg in October of 1949. In April 1951, Fred returned to Alberta, and began work as a farm labourer in Scandia. Helene along with her daughter Marianne re-joined Fred in December of 1951, as immigrants to Canada. Her son Guenter was born, in Brooks in November of 1952, after which the family settled on the Oscar Johnson farm in Scandia. Helene and her family left the farm and moved to Medicine Hat in 1969, where she continued to reside until her passing. We would like to convey a special thank you to the nurses and care givers of Sunnyside Care Center for providing Helene with loving care and attention throughout her many years of stay. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery in the spring.
