Obituary for Dorothy Lillian Cator (Higginson)

Dorothy Lillian Cator (Higginson)
Dorothy passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with family by her side on January 14, 2016 at the age of 91. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Joan (Robert) McKenzie of Medicine Hat AB, son Barry (Sandra) Shaw of Spruce Grove AB, grandson Michael McKenzie of Toronto ON, granddaughter Carmen (Quintin) Olson and great-granddaughter Quinn Olson of Irvine AB, sisters; Kathy (Lyle) Gallaugher of Regina, Ethel Bradley (Gull Lake), Gloria Smith of Abbey, brother Garry (Sharlene) Higginson of Success and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents Harry and Lillian Higginson, sisters Edith Wellsch and Gladys Ford, brother Jim Higginson, husbands Jim Shaw (1980) and Edward Cator (1994), brothers-in-laws Wayne Smith, Harold Wellsch, Gene Bradley and daughter-in-law Avelina Shaw.
Dorothy was born in Success and raised on the family farm. She moved to Vanguard for her first job at the Royal Bank and later transferred to the Abbey Branch where she met and married Jim Shaw, raising their two children. She also worked at the Post Office, Hales Store and the Co-op. She was extensively involved in community activities including Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion, the Rebekah Lodge, attending local dances and partying with friends. She was an avid gardener, and an enthusiastic, devoted fan of curling and baseball. Dorothy moved to a condo in Swift Current in 1997 and adapted quickly to city life. She took up bowling and walking (twice a day, rain or snow!) golfed regularly and enjoyed attending “Stars of Saskatchewan”. She loved quilting, weekly cards, garage sale-ing, baking and hiking with her great grand-daughter during regular trips to Fairmont BC.
Dorothy lived an active life, living on her own until the last few months and will always be remembered as a strong, independent woman.
At Dorothy’s request cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will follow at a later date in Swift Current. In lieu of flowers donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
