Obituary for Alice Edith Mayer (Weiss)

Alice Edith Mayer of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Herbert Mayer, passed away on Monday, September 28th, 2015 at the age of 97 years. Alice leaves to cherish her memory her children, Tania (Doug) Borg and Miles (Michele) Mayer; five grandchildren, Charity Borg (Trevor Sokolan), Megan Borg (Jordan Lane), Ian Borg, Lucas Mayer and Nathan Mayer; one sister, Lillian Hassard; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as Herb’s family. Alice was predeceased by her parents, David and Dorothea Weiss; three brothers; five sisters; and numerous relatives on Herb’s side. Alice was born March 19th, 1918 in Medicine Hat. After obtaining her teacher’s certificate, at Calgary Normal School in 1938, Alice taught for several years. In 1944 Alice married Herb Mayer. They bought a farm in 1949 in the Manyberries area next to the ranch Alice was brought up on. In 1992, illness forced them to move to Medicine Hat. Alice’s beloved Herb passed away September 28th, 1993. Alice loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She was fond of all children and found their fresh young minds interesting and enjoyable. Former pupils (grandparents themselves now) still kept in touch. Alice did volunteer work with various charities for 36 years and found this absorbing and gratifying work. She enjoyed handicrafts, knitting, crocheting, reading, music, crossword puzzles, gardening, travelling, baking and cooking. Alice enjoyed the country life with animals, a large garden and flowers. She became involved with the Manyberries History book and with cooperation of all who helped, they produced a successful book. Due to the wonderful care of family, neighbors and friends, Alice was very grateful to stay in her own home until age 87 at which time she moved to Masterpiece. The family is grateful to the staff at Masterpiece for the love and care provided to Alice over the past 10 years.
