Obituary for Solomon Reinhold "Sol" Ruff

Solomon (Sol) Ruff, 86, of High River, Alberta, passed away peacefully at High River Hospital on June 16, 2019. Born on March 25, 1933, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and raised in Burstall, Saskatchewan, Sol was the youngest child of Jacob and Minnie Ruff (nee Moser). He is lovingly remembered by his two children, Craig and Chris; his grandchildren, Janae and Dannica; his sister, Frieda; and a host of other family and close friends. Sol was pre-deceased by his loving wife Marie; his brothers Alfred, Ed, and Walter; and his sisters, Martha, Len, and Helen. Following a short time with the Air Force, Sol began his life-long career working with the Canadian Pacific Railway. This career saw him frequently moving around southern Alberta and British Columbia over the next 35 years. It was in the town of Stettler, Alberta where he met his future bride, Marie, and they married, in Medicine Hat, on October 31, 1964. Their sons, Craig and Christopher, came along in 1969 and 1972 respectively. Sol enjoyed playing and watching a wide variety of sports, including hockey, baseball, football and curling. He was happiest when on fishing trips with friends and family. He enjoyed travelling and visiting new places in Canada, the USA and Europe. Giving back to the community was important to him and he volunteered with many charitable organisations, most notably the Elks of Canada. With the Elks he was heavily involved in organising a cross-Canada charity run to help raise money and awareness for children with hearing impairments. Sol will always be remembered as a man who was dedicated to his family and friends. No matter where his career would take him, he would always make time to visit his parents, siblings, cousins and friends every year. His home was always open to visitors and everyone was made welcome. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at ST. PETER LUTHERAN CHURCH, 758 – 8th Street SE, on Saturday, July 27th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. Interment will follow at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, 5160 Gershaw Drive SW. Reception to take place at St. Peter Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elks of Canada, Suite 100 2629 - 29th Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4S 2N9. Condolences for the family may be sent to www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com.
