Obituary for Raymond Edgar Bryant

Ray was born April 7,1929 in Glasgow, Montana to Henry and Eunice Bryant; a ranching family. Dad was the third son of four.

As a young man, dad worked on various ranches in Nevada. Dad also worked as a driller at the Ruby Hill Silver Mine near Eureka, Nevada, an underground mine- he always said six months was long enough. He returned to Terry, Montana where he had a small sheep farm. Terry, Montana was where he met Mom, Trudy Rossing, a young LPN at the local hospital. They married on December 27, 1958.

Dad and Mom immigrated to Canada in 1961, to Fort Fraser, B.C. where they started ranching, logging and saw-milling. They moved to Alberta in 1970, farming and ranching in various locations. They retired to Medicine Hat in 1997 to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Their daughter was ecstatic! Dad and Mom travelled to Alaska in their camper van several times. They loved those trips. They also visited family in BC, North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Dad was a natural musician playing guitar and banjo by ear. He had a knack for drawing and cowboy poetry. He enjoyed the live country bands that came to the Cypress View Lodge where he moved to in July 2022. Dad was a voracious reader enjoying history and biographies. He enjoyed walking the park pathways here, family dinners and celebrations. Most of all he enjoyed going for coffee with mom at various locales in Medicine Hat.

Dad instilled the values of honesty and a strong work ethic into his kids. He had a sense of humor and enjoyed being around his grandsons’ dog, Henry. Dad had a strong sense of right and wrong and you knew when you crossed the line. He believed in common courtesy. There were no grey areas with dad, it was always black or white. He loved his family; missing mom since her passing after doing his best to care for her during her illness.

Dad was 93 when he unexpectedly died on January 30, 2023. He was predeceased by Mom, his wife of 62 years, in 2020; his brothers, Cliff, Bill, Ernie and brother-in-law, Marvin Sloboden.
Dad will be lovingly remembered by his children, Stephen (Cheryl) Bryant, Brenda (Doug) Bird; grandsons, Michael Bird and Matthew Bird; sisters-in-law, Donna Bryant, Bethel Bryant, Martha Sloboden and family, Elizabeth (Dean) Erickson and family; and brother-in-law, Melvin Rossing.

“Oh the last goodbye’s the hardest one to say.
And this is where the cowboy rides away.”

A private interment will be held in the spring of 2023 at Hillside Cemetery Medicine Hat, AB with family.
