Obituary for Phyllis Jessie Kennedy (Shire)

Phyllis Jessie Kennedy
June 4th, 1926 ~ June 21st, 2022

Be still and know that I am God
Psalm 46-10
Phyllis Kennedy peacefully passed away at Riverview Care Centre with family by her
side. At 96 years old, Phyllis wore her age well and was proud to inform anyone that she was
the same age as Queen Elizabeth II. She was predeceased by her husband, William James (Jim) Kennedy, of the Royal Canadian Air Force, whom she married in 1945. Also predeceased by her parents, George (Annie) Shire; her siblings, Lorraine (Alex) Grant, Ernest (Evelyn) Shire, Glen (Jean) Shire, and Lucille (Henry) Lemke. She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her children, Beverly (Jack) Kolody, Glenn Kennedy, Norma (John) Kerr, and Cindy (Dwayne) Levitt. Phyllis loved and adored her many grandchildren, Jacquie (Kevin) Hubbard, Jamie Kennedy (Tanya Peters), Shaun (Carla) Kolody, Christopher (Cristen) Kerr, Jeremy (Danielle) Kerr, Megan (Robert) Frigon, and Chad Levitt (Caitlin Jahner). Also exceptionally loved were her nine great-grandchildren. She was a favourite Auntie to many nieces and nephews as well as a special grandmother to the late Tina Kennedy's children. During their 46 years of marriage, Jim and Phyllis lived in a number of cities due to Jim's transfers relating to his employment in the oil industry. Being a social couple, Phyllis and Jim made many friends and regularly attended church where Phyllis participated in bible studies and Christian Women's Club. In addition, she was a member of Oil Wives, Toast Mistress, and bowling leagues. Being a lover of people and an entrepreneur, she was also involved in many sales related enterprises. Travel was a passion in her life and took her to the Holy Land, Hawaii, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean. In retirement years, winters were spent in Arizona as a snowbird. Painting, knitting, and paper toll were just a few of the crafting hobbies that Phyllis excelled at. She was renowned for her abundant gardens and vibrant flower beds.
After spending childhood years with her older brothers, she was a tomboy at heart playing ball, climbing trees, and shooting gophers. The Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Blue Jays were her favourite sports teams. After spending many enjoyable years in a granny suite in Spruce Grove with Cindy's family, she moved to Medicine Hat to The Wellington and finally to Riverview Care Centre. Her family is appreciative beyond words with the exceptional and compassionate care she received there; she referred to them as her family. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 27th, 2022 at 2 pm at Victory Lutheran Church, 2793 Southview Drive SE, Medicine Hat with Pastor James Bredeson officiating and a live stream available at https://victorylutheran.ca.
