Obituary for Lily Silcher

Lily Silcher of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Erwin Silcher, passed away on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at the age of 80 years. Lily Silcher was born Lily Ilene Fischer on August 7th, 1942 in Medicine Hat during WW2, a rough and tough era. She was born and raised in Medicine Hat and worked in surrounding areas such as Grassy Lake, Calgary and then finally in Medicine Hat. Lily then met her life partner, Erwin Silcher, and were married for 31 years until his untimely passing in 2002. Lily then dedicated her life to her children, Carol Silcher (Ken Shupenia) and Mark Silcher (Michelle Kowal); her grandchildren, Shay Hagedorn (Kassie Negenman), Jenelle Hagedorn-Silcher (Neil Lucki), Alicia (Tanner) Tendler, and Brittany Silcher; her great grandchildren, Renelle, Destinee and recently, Olivia. She is also survived by one brother and one sister. After her husbands passing, Lily spent every day with Carol, shopping and socializing at the local coffee houses. This is when Lily and her daughter, Carol, became best friends. Lily enjoyed fishing with her family at Elkwater and Reesor Lake. Lily always liked the challenge as to who caught the first and largest fish. Her greatest achievement was when she caught two fish on the same line at the same time. She was so excited and proud of herself. We all just dropped our rods and said, “lets go home.” She has never let us live that down. Every time we went fishing, she reminded us. Lily loved the Sunday family dinners we had at her son, Mark’s, house and especially enjoyed all the holiday dinners with Carol when the whole family got together. She always complained of the noise but we knew she loved every moment. As the family grew the noise got worse, she loved it. She would sit at the table playing cards with everyone especially the game “31”. She secretly would cheat to win but we soon caught onto her antics. Lily looked at life like no other. She would find so much joy in the simplest of things, showing the rest of us how beautiful life is. One of Lily’s favorite jobs was being all the grandchildren’s afterschool care giver. At the end of the school day, Lily would walk to the school to pick up her grandchildren and bring them to her home for a DELICIOUS microwaved bologna and cheese sandwich followed with lemon cookies (every child’s favorite). No matter what Lily did, she did it with her whole heart and filled our lives with love. The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE Medicine Hat, AB T1A 1Z5, on Saturday, March 11th, 2023 at 1:00 pm with Pastor Shane Hein officiating.
