Obituary for John Sidlick

It is with great sadness, we announce that John Stephen Sidlick passed away on May 7, 2022. John was born in Vita, Manitoba on August 28, 1938. John would often tell stories of his childhood in Yorkton, always with great mirth and a glint of pure mischief in his eye. These stories were of youthful adventures and often “misadventures” which he and his many friends, and his siblings would get into. Often playing silly pranks and jokes, and always running free, exploring the town and all the nearby lakes/ponds/streams, life was good. John finished his schooling in Yorkton, and entered the workforce right after high school. On June 13th, 1959, John married the love of his life, Elizabeth Zandee. Throughout their married life, John and Betty enjoyed socializing with their many friends, hosting and attending dinner parties, many church activities, and going to dances which was always a big highlight on their social calendars. John also took great pleasure in fishing, hunting, and golfing with his many guy friends. Later on in retirement, John and a friend would build blue bird boxes, and took care of them, setting them up in designated, and often remote areas, and cleaning them out after the birds had flown away. Always curious by nature, and never one to say “no” to a drive in the countryside, or the company of good friends, John always had fun and loved a good adventure. A good part of John’s work life and career was with the Beaver Lumber Company. He rose up the ranks, and became the “go to guy” to send in, to trouble-shoot the lumberyards that were struggling. This also meant many moves for the family, and the opportunity to learn about and experience firsthand many varied communities spread out all across Saskatchewan. Everywhere they went, John and Betty found new friendships, and made the most of whatever the town had to offer. Later on in his career, John worked at Loewen Windows, in sales, living in Saskatoon and Regina, which he enjoyed every bit as much. In sales, he again travelled all over Saskatchewan, seeing different sights, and always meeting new and interesting people. In retirement, John and Betty left Saskatchewan, and moved to Medicine Hat, where they were situated a bit closer to their two children, in Cranbrook and Calgary. Medicine Hat quickly became home, where John continued enjoying golfing with a group of dear friends, as well as fishing and bowling, horticulture, and even, one winter….. skating at a local rink. It was such a pleasure to hear John recount the often funny stories of all the continuing adventures he and his friends got into. John will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife, Elizabeth; his daughter, Melanie Loseth (Dan); son, Tim (Doris); his grandchildren, Casey Loseth (Kate) and their children Sam and Eleanore, Larsson Loseth (Olivia) and their children Lucy and Norman; his brother-in-law, Lloyd (Marie) Hasper, as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. John is predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Laura Sidlick; his brother, Al; sister-in-law, Bert Sidlick and sister, Vi Sidlick. The family wishes to extend a big thank you to the nurses and doctors at the Medicine Hat Hospital for their compassion and care.
