Obituary for Helen Bayer (Shapka)

It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Bayer (nee Shapka) announce her passing on June 26th, 2021 at the age of 97 years. Helen was born and raised in Alberta, in Albert Park, which later became part of Calgary. She was born on May 19th, 1924 to John and Ann Shapka; in the house which still stands today. In the 1940’s, Helen married Zyg Burnett and moved to the Iddesleigh area, where they farmed and lived together with their son, Gary, until Zyg’s death in the 1960’s. Later, she met and married Ed Bayer; they made their home in Medicine Hat and enjoyed many years together. Helen was very interested and active in bowling, BINGO, cooking and gardening. She was predeceased by her parents; husbands, Zig Burnett and Ed Bayer; son, Gary Burnett; brothers, George Shapka and Johnny Shapka; and sister, Katherine. Helen leaves to cherish her memory her older brother, Steve; younger sister, Isabelle; nephews, John Shapka and Douglas Shapka; seven great-nephews and nieces; and 13 great-great nephews and nieces. She will be missed by all her family as week as by her many friends. The Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Gershaw Dr SW & 10 Ave SW, Medicine Hat, AB, on Saturday, July 3rd, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Bob Church officiating.
