Obituary for Esther Helen Porfoun

Esther Helen Harder was born on April 9, 1933 in Cruikshank, Sask. She grew up just outside the town on the family farm with her six siblings, Dorothy, Lenora, Tina, Leonard, Elsie and Clarence. She treasured and valued her Christian upbringing and all her years of growing up on the farm. She had many wonderful memories to share and dwell on, especially in her last few years. At the age of 18, she moved to the big city, Calgary. Esther waitressed at a few places there and then met her would be husband, Tommy. They were married on June 26, 1952. They wanted a country life as they had both grown up on the farm and eventually moved to Oyen, near where Tommy had grown up. In Oyen, they were blessed with a large family and had the privilege to raise Sandy, Kevin, Darcy, Rod, Ken, Chad and niece, Roxanne. Tommy and Esther had a house that was full of life. The coffee pot was always full and had food on the table. Esther’s main job was raising all of the kids that came through her home, but she also enjoyed many hobbies which showed her talent as an artist. Whether it was with her ceramic business, sewing, porcelain dolls, china painting, or quilting with her church ladies. As her family grew, Esther became “Nan” to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She valued all the quality time she had with her kids and grandkids, sharing her knowledge of the kitchen and playing games around the table. Nan enjoyed any and all family gatherings and always sent everyone home with a care package. After 47 years of marriage and a brave battle with cancer, Tommy went home to be with Jesus. After a few years and many “discussions”, Nan moved to Medicine Hat to try condo living. There she picked up a very active social life, with getting involved in her church, volunteering at prairie gleaners and going for coffee with the ladies. She became a regular at her church sewing group and made many a quilt for her family and to donate to those in need. After 15 years of condo life and a few more “discussions”, Nan thought it was about time she could retire and was able to enjoy life at Chinook Village for the last year. On November 9, 2023, with family by her side at 90 years young, Nan went home to be with her Saviour. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Tommy; her children, Gary and Robin; her grandchildren, Dwight (infant) and Kristina; her siblings, Dorothy, Lenora, Tina, Leonard, and Elsie, and many more loved ones. She leaves her legacy to Sandy, Kevin, Darcy, Rod (Shelley), Ken (Sonja), Chad (Joeleen), Roxanne (Ron) Smigelski, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, her brother, nieces, nephews and so many others. The Memorial Service will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE Medicine Hat, AB, on Tuesday, November 14th, 2023 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Lance Duncalfe officiating.
