Obituary for Edward Anhorn

Edward Anhorn of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Shirley Anhorn, passed away on Sunday, November 12th, 2023, at the age of 90 years. Edward Anhorn (Eddie to his friends) was born February 4, 1933, into the family of Gottlieb and Mary Anhorn, one of 11 children. The only remaining sibling is now, Elmer (Doreen), and sister-in-law, Mona. Ed is survived by his loving spouse of 69 years, Shirley (nee Moch). Ed is also survived by daughters, Sandra (Bruce) and Karmynn (Grant); granddaughter, Amber (Mike), great-grandsons, Austin and Ty; grandson, Dallas (Tara); granddaughter, Taylor (Lourens); and great-granddaughters, Zahn and Lucia. Ed was predeceased by parents, Gottlieb and Mary; Shirley’s parents, Phillip and Freda; his nine brothers and sisters; as well as his daughter, Debra and son-in-law Gordon. Ed was a cowboy! Straight, bootcut jeans, cowboy boots, belt and a hat were his everyday attire. He was at home on his horse, as in his chair. He had a gentle, quiet nature. He was always interested in “the weather”; loved his home at the farm, and more yet, his cattle! He could spot an individual cow from miles away. He loved dogs and had a special one called Scamp. He liked hunting in his earlier years and was a good marksman with a gun. He also loved bowling and arm wrestling. He loved turkey shoots and neighbours of his would ask him to “get a turkey for them”. Ed was a good carpenter, and everything had to be “just so” measuring more than once to get it straight. He built a few houses along with his brother Alvin. Alvin and Ed were very close as brothers, being only 14 months apart. Ed tells me he cried the first day Alvin went to school and he couldn’t go with him.
Ed had the habit of constantly checking his wristwatch in these later years – in his early years, not so much. Music was a big part of his life, western music for sure. His favorite singers being Ray Price and George Strait. He was a very good guitar player and also a good singer. Ed loved horses and always had a favorite one, even as a young boy. We all remember Ed’s horse Ringo. He was never one to abuse any animal and if he saw it on television, it infuriated him. The family would like to express appreciation for the kindness and care Ed received while a resident at Masterpiece Retirement Centre; also, the professionalism and kindness shown to the family in Ed’s last days. Thank you to Dr. Shrives and the kind words from the residents to Shirley. You have earned your rest, Ed; now join the rest of your sisters and brothers. The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, on Tuesday, November 21st, 2023, at 1:30 pm with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. Interment will follow at SAAMIS PRAIRIE VIEW CEMETERY. . Memorial gifts in Eddie's memory may be made to the S.P.C.A., 55 Southview Drive SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8E8.
