Why Plan Ahead?
Pre-arrangement helps relieve family or friends of the task of making important decisions for someone else at a time of emotional stress. Other advantages are that choices can be made and many questions can be addressed with no sense of urgency. It is important to keep a copy of the arrangements in an easily accessible place for survivors and to let them know of your pre-arranged funeral plan.
Details such as the type of services preferred, music, clergy, casket and final disposition can all be discussed and arranged by the client and the funeral director. These choices can be recorded and filed at no cost. If the person chooses to prepay the funeral, then a contract
is drawn between the funeral home and the client. In accordance with provincial legislation, all monies are deposited in a trust account with a financial institution and are guaranteed.
However, it is important not to make your prearrangement so rigid that family will feel guilty should they wish to change something. Many people believe the funeral is theirs, but, in actuality, it is for the people who are left behind and it should help meet their needs and provide comfort for them.
