How Can Your Funeral Service Professional Help?
Today, licensed funeral professionals usually arrange, conduct, and provide counselling on the technical and many of the personal details of the funeral.

When a death occurs, the first step is to contact your funeral director who will respond to the needs and requirements of your family. He/she will provide suggestions, listen to your ideas and offer choices that will provide you comfort while you make decisions.

The services he/she provides include removing the deceased from the place of death, obtaining the required legal documents, preparing the body for viewing, if desired, coordinating all details of the funeral service, providing facilities for visitation and funeral service, transporting the deceased and the mourners to the funeral service and place of final disposition and arranging for the final disposition.

In addition, all of the appropriate forms for either cremation or burial will be completed. These are as follows:
• Funeral Director’s Statement of Death
• Alberta Government Death Registration Form
• Medical Certificate of Death from the attending doctor
• Burial Permit
• Cremation authorization (if applicable)
• Out of province transportation authorization (if applicable)

Arranging the practical details of a funeral with a funeral director may be the bereaved family’s first step toward facing the reality of death. This is a necessary part of the grieving process and may help the bereaved heal emotionally.

It is important to notify family members, close relatives and friends of the death immediately. They should be advised of the time, location and type of service planned.

Your funeral director can assist with the public obituary announcement in newspapers or on the radio. Announcements are a courtesy to inform extended family, friends, working associates and others.
