The Memorial Service
This is a euphemism that people in the western world have coined to cushion the harshness and reality of death. Any service celebrating the life of an individual is really a funeral service. People who refer to a memorial service are referring to a ceremony that honours the life of the deceased similar to that of a traditional funeral. It is usually held within a few days of death and can follow either earth burial or cremation. The main difference is that the body of the deceased is not present. However, when final disposition is cremation, it may be possible to have the cremated remains present. The service is usually held in a church or funeral home chapel. The funeral director attends to all the necessary details and can, in conjunction with the family, help plan an unique and personal funeral service.
