Journey Through Grief

Journey Through Grief

Losing a loved one is a difficult time for everyone. While some may grieve openly, others will not show their emotions publicly but be experiencing the pain of loss internally. Regardless of how you cope with a loss, at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, we have aftercare resources and grief counselling services to help you through this difficult time.

Individual & Group Services

Our grief counselling services are led by qualified and experienced individuals that can help you along each step of your grief journey. Whether you are in need of one on one services or interested in participating in a grief sharing group, our counselling services will be able to help accommodate your needs.

We also offer a selection of grief support resources. These helpful articles can be found throughout the grief support section of our website. They will help you deal with grief, help friends through their journey, learn how to grieve with a purpose, help children cope with a loss, and much more.

The journey through grief is a path that every individual must travel after the loss of a loved one. Regardless of where you are along this journey, our caring staff is here to help you along each step of your path.

We Are Here to Help

Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel recognizes that the passing of a loved one brings about tremendous loss and grief. At times, feelings of loss can be overwhelming, and the opportunity to be able to talk with others who are also undergoing similar experiences is beneficial. We also invite you to browse through our online resources and contact us to speak with a member of our staff about how we can assist you.

"Grief is a whole cluster of adjustments, apprehensions and uncertainties that strike life in its forward progress and make it difficult to redirect the energies of life.”

Lynett Getz, RSW

Lynett Getz is a certified Life Celebrant as well as a registered Social Worker. She has made Medicine Hat home for most of her adult life and loves to take advantage of the beautiful sunshine that our city is blessed with and spends much of her spring, summer and fall in the great outdoors, gardening, hiking and backpacking in the mountains.  She is married to Brent and has two grown children, two  grandchildren, plus one grand puppy.  As a social worker, much of Lynett’s work has been supporting individuals and families as they experience and work through grief and loss. As a Life Celebrant, Lynett will meet and connect with the family to hear the Life Stories of the family’s recently deceased family member.  Her training and experience as a Life Celebrant focuses on providing a tribute that reflects and honours the authentic lifestyle, beliefs, characteristics, and stories of the loved ones who have passed.  These Life Stories will often incorporate special music, readings, tributes, and ceremony as well as scripture and prayer that are especially chosen for you and your family.   Each memorial service is unique and exceptional in that is designed and written with the story and life of your loved one as the focus.  Lynett is pleased to have the opportunity to work with the funeral directors and support staff at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel to provide support to families and to be able to create and provide a service that will provide reassurance, solace, and comfort to the family during a very difficult time.

Pastor Shane Hein

Pastor Shane was born and raised in Calgary, AB, later moving with his family to a farm near Hanna, AB. He graduated from J.C. Charyk Hanna High in 1988, and then chose to remain in Hanna to work on both the farm and in the family business.  He has been married to Debbie since 1999, and together they have two children, Cole and Kianna.  He cherishes his role as husband and father as the gifts that they are and loves spending time with them.  He also enjoys golfing, dabbling in computer technology, and is an avid fan of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders, and the Dallas Cowboys. During the years that Pastor Shane served in the family business he attended trade school at Red Deer College. By 2010 though, he had accepted God’s call to full-time Christian ministry and prepared to fulfill that call with the full support of all his family and friends. Upon graduating from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon in 2015, Pastor Shane accepted a call to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Medicine Hat and continues to serve this outstanding congregation to this day.  In 2019, he also accepted the position of  Chaplain of the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment; a Canadian Armed Forces Reserve Armoured unit based in Medicine Hat.  Besides his work in Medicine Hat, Pastor Shane also serves the wonderful folks of two rural congregations: St. Paul Lutheran in Burstall, SK, and Bethlehem Lutheran in Hilda, AB.  He is pleased to now be further serving the community of Medicine Hat and Southeast Alberta as the Christian Funeral Service Chapel for Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel.
