Obituary for Frederick Radley "Fred" Hall

Print
Fred was born in Medicine Hat on June 6, 1933 and passed away peacefully with family at his side on June 9, 2018 at the Riverview nursing home. Fred enjoyed a full life. He played for the Medicine Hat Tigers for two years from 1951-53. The following hockey season he traveled by steam ship from New York to Britain to play in the British National League for the Ayr Raiders in Scotland for the 1954-55 season. Fred was traded to the Nottingham Panthers where he played the 1955-56 season. During this time, he met Heather Gough and before returning to Canada for the summer they were married on May 8, 1956. Fred played one more season in the BNL, 1956-57, for the Harringay Racers. The team travelled to Russia and played the Russian National team on Christmas Day outside to a sell-out crowd. Fred lived in many places but always considered his home as Medicine Hat. He was a businessman and had many successful businesses in Medicine Hat (P-Lawson Travel, Craven and Hall Real Estate, Craven and Hall Insurance, Century Homes and Reliance Insurance). One of his business adventures was building the Westlander Inn where numerous famous entertainers came including Joe Firth, Kenny Rogers, Ronnie Hawkins, Bobby Curtola, Keith Hitchner and Ian Tyson. Fred and Ian became quite friendly and Ian wrote and recorded a song about Fred called “Freddie Hall”. As a young boy, Fred raised and kept many animals at their family home on 10th Street. His favorite was his horse, Tony, which one day he walked from Medicine Hat out to the Seitz farm located at Wisdom (south of town). We will miss Fred’s smile, sparkling eyes and sense of humour. Fred was an awesome father, father-in-law, husband, brother, friend and companion to many people.
