Effie Elizabeth Burry (nee Stokes) went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, May 21, 2018 at the age of 81 years. She leaves to mourn her loss and celebrate her life four sons: David (Kim) Burry of Goulds, Newfoundland, Gary (Lynette) Burry of Medicine Hat, Rick (Marnie) Burry of Medicine Hat and Bob (Tina) Burry of Morinville, Alberta. She also leaves six grandchildren, Daniel (Kevannah), Mark, Emily, Sam, Sarah, Michael and one great grandchild, Hunter. Also mourning her loss are two sisters, Pearl Stagg and Lillian Clark, both of St. John’s, Newfoundland. She was predeceased by her husband, Cyril Claude Burry and her parents, Eli and Emma Stokes. Effie was born at Cape Freels, Newfoundland on June 11, 1936 a place that remained dear to her heart all her life. At the age of 6 after an illness with meningitis, she was left profoundly deaf, and spent the rest of her schooling years at the School for the Deaf in Halifax Nova Scotia. After completing her education, she returned to Newfoundland where she met Dad and they were married in 1957. They settled in St. John’s where they raised their four sons. Mom loved to pick berries, especially Bakeapples and Partridge berries. She also loved to garden, sew, crochet and bake - especially her homemade bread which we will all miss. She loved her Lord and Savior and in her final days she praised Him with all her heart, thanking Him for her life and her family. You’re free now Mom, go and listen to the beautiful sounds of heaven. Thanks to all those who walked with Mom in the last few days of her life making the journey that much more special. A service to celebrate Mom’s life will be held at a later date in Newfoundland. Donations in Memory of Effie can be made to Whispering Pines Camp through Hillcrest Church.
