Barry was born in Vancouver and spent his younger life in Brandon, Manitoba. He was a hockey player, drafted by the NY Rangers. Barry spent 5 years in the Canadian Navy where he became a Master Electrician. He met his wife Marlene in Calgary playing fastball and they were married in Medicine Hat. For a number of years, Barry & Marlene were self-employed with Barry's Electric and later they became Class 1 truck drivers where they long hauled until they sold the business. Later Barry did some oil hauling for Al & Brenda Gabel, his good friends. Once he retired he spent many years going South through the winter months.
