Obituary for Edith Marie Quinn (Mutlow)

Edith Marie Quinn passed away Aug 8/15 at the age of 92. Born Feb 16, 1923 to Richard and Nellie Mutlow at McGee, SK she lost her mother at age 8 and went to live with her grandmother. At age 17 she left to work in the Saskatoon area first and then Regina as a housekeeper. In Regina at age 20 she met Neal Mayer of Golden Prairie, Sk and married him Mar. 18, 1944. They farmed first in the Golden Prairie area then a few miles west of Maple Creek. In 1956 Edith had surgery and treatments in Regina for cancer. She was so proud to have stayed cancer free for 59 yrs. From 1966-69 Edith worked at the Nursing Home in Maple Creek as well as helping Neal farm. After Neal passed away suddenly in 1969, she was finally reunited with her brother, sister, father and other family in the Edmonton area, moving there to work as a nanny until 1971. In May '71 she returned to housekeeping at the Cypress Lodge in '71, becoming head housekeeper there until she left in 1986.

In Sept '71 she met Leo Quinn and married him in Nov of that year, gaining a whole new family in the process. She looked after his father till he passed, cared for her husband Leo when he got cancer in 1988 until his passing in '93, and remained close to Leo's remaining brother Joe after that. She enjoyed fishing with the brothers, canning produce, baking, crocheting, knitting, reading and devoted many years to caring for sick and elderly in their homes. Edith volunteered for Legion bingos and flea markets as well as delivering Meals on Wheels into her 90's. She also babysat several children over the years.

Edith was very adaptable, saying often "we take what comes". She had many sad and traumatic events in her long life but instead of being bitter those experiences softened her heart so she could make others feel loved and special. She made the best of her circumstances even in the last year or two, having to accept help and eventually moving into Cypress Lodge in Feb/15 where she told everyone that she was happy and content living her remaining time where she knew the staff and the building. Many were the recipients of a hug or some teasing which also gave HER joy.

Predeceased by her parents, brother, two husbands, two nephews, two nephews in law, and several brothers and sisters in law, she leaves to mourn her passing her sister Marion Balog (Edwin) of Mundare, AB; nieces Nellie Turner and Dorothy Sichkaryk of Fort Sask, AB; several great nieces and great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews; brother in law Joe Quinn of Gravelbourg, SK; chosen family Twyla and KC Racine, Laura and Tim Bodvarson (Kara and Joe Bye) of Maple Creek, SK and special friends Mike and Wally Weber of Maple Creek, SK and Dawn Raymond of Weyburn, SK.
